EDULIS EDULIS, the Education Library and Information Service of the Western Cape Education Department, provides the following to all WCED educators:
EDULIS ensures that WCED educators have access to management, research and curriculum-related material in order to support relevant and effective teaching and learning. Requests to loan library material from EDULIS may be made by letter, phone, fax or e-mail to:
EDUPALS EDUPALS is the library administration software used to facilitate on-line access to the EDULIS Library stock. PALS is a multi-institution system, i.e. it can house separate libraries as separate institutions with their own catalogues and loan policies. It was, therefore, possible in 1994 for EDULIS to become an institution on PALS. In 1999, SITA (State Information Technology Agency) was requested to transfer the EDULIS database onto a separate machine, so that libraries wishing to combine resources of an educational nature could become part of their own network. This was the birth of EDUPALS, the library network supporting the education system on PALS. It became operational in May 2000 with its own WEBPALS module for public access. EDUPALS currently consists of the EDULIS Library and the libraries of Somerset College and of the Graduate School of Business at UCT. An EDUPALS pilot school library project is currently in the implementation phase. The education library services of the education departments of a number of the other provinces have also indicated that they are interested in joining EDUPALS. In future EDUPALS could, therefore, become a tool to standardise the library administration software for education library services, and also for school libraries, throughout South Africa. Patron terminals are available for clients visiting EDULIS to search the catalogue. Members of EDULIS can also, in the comfort of their home, at their desk or in their school, use WEBPALS as a means to scan book reviews, suggest purchases and search the entire PALS network for library material they may wish to request on loan.
